Law firms generally employ paralegals and other support staff to assist attorneys in providing legal services to clients. Over the years, a paralegal's role in a law firm has become extremely important in providing lower cost legal services to the public. Paralegals may perform tasks such as preparing legal documents, meeting with clients, communicating with opposing counsel or other non-party, among other tasks. As a non-attorney, these tasks must all be done under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Practicing law without a license can come with serious implications and ruin one’s career. It is important to know what unlicensed practice of law is, how it may affect your role as a paralegal or support staff member, and ways to be sure you do not cross the line.
