We live in an age where digital information is constantly in front of us or at our fingertips and where the laws governing the use of this information develop slower than the equipment used to transmit it. Two consequences of this instant access to information and slow development of regulations is that piracy of intellectual property has increased and the rights holders and online service providers are constantly battling each other over how to protect the rights of intellectual property owners while trying not to diminish the right of free access to information.

This presentation will focus on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and how rights holders can use it to protect their intellectual property and how, if followed correctly, it provides “Safe Harbors” (limits the liability) for online service providers from suits for contributory copyright infringement.
