Job Summary: 

We are currently looking for a legal assistant with litigation experience.  It is a hybrid position - more than a legal secretary but a paralegal certification is not necessary.

We are a property tax litigation firm.  Most of our legal assistant work requires the use of templates for pleadings, motions, discovery, etc., e-filing and keeping their attorney’s calendar/docket up to date at all times.  We have a tremendous volume.  Our filing season is generally from mid-July through early October.  This is a busy time for all of us and is typically the time of the year when the majority of overtime is required.  This is where the ability to multi-task is extremely important as it can get chaotic at times.

Attention to detail and organization is essential.  Legal assistants must be proactive and manage their attorney’s docket effectively, making sure their attorney is where they need to be every day and all deadlines are being met.  They must be able to follow up, follow up, follow up and not be shy about reminding their attorney (repeatedly, if necessary) of deadlines and getting essential documents and answers from the attorney when they are not responsive.  Since we have so many cases, these attorneys are flooded with emails every day.  I have found that the most effective way to get answers from them is to ask face-to-face to which they are all very receptive.  We have found that introverts do not do well in this environment.  Basically, the legal assistants that have worked out the best have taken ownership of and managed their attorney’s practice.  

I should mention that all the staff help answer the phones since we don’t have a receptionist.  It rings throughout the office and they take turns picking up the calls and transferring them throughout the day, although we typically don’t get an abundance of calls since we all have direct dials. 

We’ve got a great group here.  Very collegial and friendly.  We are looking for the right person with a positive, can-do attitude that will fit in well within the firm’s culture.  

We are located at the Galleria, have flexible work hours, can work remotely when necessary and have great benefits for a small-ish firm.  Overtime will be required.

Requirements or Qualifications: 
5 years of litigation experience, ability to multi-task and take ownership of cases, ability to work as a team and individually
