The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California is accepting applications for a full-time executive assistant/paralegal position stationed in Los Angeles, CA.  The Federal Public Defender’s Office is committed to the pursuit of justice by aggressively advocating in federal court for the constitutional rights and inherent dignity of individuals who are charged with federal crimes and cannot afford their own lawyer.

Job Duties:  As an executive assistant/paralegal you will provide a full range of executive-level secretarial, paralegal and administrative support services to the Federal Public Defender and Chief Deputy. General areas of responsibility include filing of court documents electronically; preparing and editing draft pleadings, reports, and correspondence; cite checking; accurately maintaining up-to-date case files; maintaining attorney’s calendar; managing business travel itineraries; screening telephone calls; processing mail; and any additional administrative and secretarial duties, as needed.  The executive assistant/paralegal will also prepare PowerPoint presentations and talking points for speaking events; assist in all aspects of case preparation, hearings, and trials; perform legal research; inform clients of their case status, court appearances and answer general inquiries; organize conferences and office events; and assist CJA panel representatives, as needed.

Requirements or Qualifications: 

Requirements: All applicants must have graduated from an accredited school with a bachelor’s degree and at least one-year specialized experience performing progressively responsible duties as a legal assistant, paralegal, or administrative assistant.  An ABA certified paralegal certificate or graduate degree is preferred.  The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of legal secretarial principles, practices, methods, and techniques; an understanding of district and circuit court rules, protocols, policies, and precedents; and knowledge of legal terminology and Blue Book citation format.  A high level of computer literacy is required, and applicants must be able to organize work and set priorities to meet critical deadlines on their own.  Must have experience with online research databases (i.e., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and legal document management databases (i.e., dtSearch, CaseMap and similar databases).  A notary license is preferred.  A background investigation is required as a condition of employment.  Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents seeking citizenship as described here: https://www.uscourts.gov/careers/search-judiciary-jobs/citizenship-requi...

This position handles sensitive information and all duties must be treated with the utmost confidentiality.  The work schedule is 9:00 am-6:00 pm or 8:30 am-5:30 pm (non-negotiable), but the executive assistant/paralegal must be available to work at night and on the weekends, as needed.
