U.S. Legal System and Procedure

This session will assist those in taking the Certified Paralegal Exam review for the U.S. Legal System portion of the knowledge section of the exam. The session offers a broad and basic view of the fundamentals of the United States Legal System. We will discuss the history of the American legal system.

It will focus on the following:

  1. Sources of Law and terminology
  2. The U.S. Constitution, history and major provisions; Relationship between state and federal governments
  3. Enforcement of the Law. A review of the court system, including concepts such as jurisdiction, venue and how courts are created
  4. Limitations on judicial decision making, including constitutional limitations, statutes of limitations, res judicata and immunity
