LIVE! Real Estate
Registration fees are $80 per course for NALA members, and $105 for non-members. Fees vary for courses presented in two parts.

The audio portion of the presentation is conducted via telephone conference call. This is a toll free call.

For groups, more than one participant per site, is $80 for one NALA member or $105 for one non-member registrant plus $45 for each additional person. Participants must register in order to receive Certificates of Attendance and CLE credit. Registrations of groups are handled through NALA Headquarters. Contact Mariah Williams at
mwilliams@nala.org.

CLE credit toward maintenance of the CP credential is available for completion of NALA Campus LIVE! programs. The maximum credit available is two hours per course.

This course will explain the steps taken by counsel for sellers, purchasers, and lenders in preparing for and closing commercial real estate transactions.  We will review the process beginning with the drafting of the purchase contract and establishment of the closing schedule.  Due diligence reviews to be performed by the seller, purchaser, and lender including online research, will be examined.  We will discuss the preparation of closing day deliverables such as deeds, deeds of trust/mortgages, promissory notes, and closing documents.   Post-closing tasks such as the recording and filing of conveyance documents and other instruments and the issuance of title policies will be explained.

Eva M. Merrell, ACP, a senior paralegal at the St. Louis, MO, firm of Armstrong Teasdale LLP since 1998, specializes in the areas of public finance and real estate.  She has presented NALA Campus LIVE! courses since 2011 and co-presented the Paralegal Section, Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law for the National Association of Bond Lawyers in 2007-2009.  She has served in a number of positions for the St. Louis Paralegal Association since 1997, including her current role as Job Bank Chair.  She received her BS Degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and her Paralegal Certificate from The American Institute for Paralegal Studies.  She was the first paralegal in Missouri to be awarded the ACP specialty in real estate.

This presentation offers an overview of basic property terminology and application, types of property, rights to property, and land use issues that every paralegal should be familiar with, especially those specializing in general civil litigation, contracts, or real estate law.  Examples will be provided to insure clarity and complete comprehension so the paralegal can more efficiently assist attorneys in matters dealing with property issues.

Laura Thomas Eubank graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.A. in History and a Minor in Criminal Justice.  She earned her law degree from Faulkner University.  Laura was an Eagle Scholarship recipient while in law school. She competed in the 1L Moot Court Competition and was a member of several trial competition teams including the Buffalo/Niagra Trial Competition team, the American Association for Justice Trial Competition Team, the Nation Trial Competition Team, and she was a finalist in the Greg Allen Mock Trial Competition.  Laura was also the Secretary for the Student Bar Association, Treasurer for the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, and Vice President of the Women’s Student Association.  She also received awards for best grade in her Contracts II and Criminal Procedure classes.  Laura was a student mediator and mediated cases for both Montgomery and Autauga County District Courts. She was also a Senior Editor for the Faulkner Law Review.  Her article Overruling the Overwhelming Necessity Standard for Modifications of Child Custody in Alabama: Ex parte Earl Cleghorn was published in the Spring 2010 edition of the Faulkner Law Review. 
 
While in Law School, Laura clerked for a Montgomery, Alabama civil defense firm, interned for Judge Charles Price, Presiding Judge for the 15th Circuit of Alabama, and also clerked for the Environmental and Executive Divisions of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. After graduating from law school, she was appointed a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Alabama.  Laura is currently Assistant Attorney General/Associate General Counsel for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.  She works primarily on enforcement cases with the Department’s Water Division, Personnel matters, and has also worked in the BP litigation.  Laura has taught classes in Law and Technology at South University, and Property Law as well as Paralegal classes at Faulkner University. She has also taught Continuing Legal Education classes on Technology in the Courtroom.  Laura is a member of the Montgomery County Bar Association and Vice President of the Women’s Section.
