The mild climate and natural assets, such as pristine beaches and riverside boardwalks, special events, and the largest urban park system in the nation, make it a popular tourist destination. The city typically has more than 2.8 million overnight visitors in a year.

The Jacksonville Landing is a popular riverfront dining and shopping area, and the Southbank and Northbank Riverwalks offer spectacular views of the skyline. Friendship Fountain, said to be the world’s largest fountain, is next to St. Johns River Park, and just east of the fountain is the Jacksonville Maritime Museum right on the Riverwalk.

The Mayport Ferry, connecting Mayport and Fort George Island, is the last ferry in Florida. Water taxis are a popular way to enjoy the spectacular night lights of the city.

There are a number of art galleries and museums as well as several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Catherine Street Fire Station located in Metropolitan Park.

The city is a major shipping hub and is home to many prominent corporations and organizations. There is also a significant military presence, including Naval Station Mayport with the third largest Navy fleet concentration in the US, and the nearby Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay, giving Jacksonville the third largest military presence in the nation.
