Certification

On April 30, 2014, The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) granted accreditation to the NALA Certified Paralegal program for demonstrating compliance with the NCCA Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. NCCA is the accrediting body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. The NCCA Standards were created to ensure certification programs adhere to modern standards of practice for the certification industry.  The NALA Certified Paralegal program joins an elite group of more than 120 organizations representing over 270 certification programs that have received and maintained NCCA accreditation. More information on the NCCA is available online at www.credentialingexcellence.org/NCCA

Professional certification is a time honored career development tool. It is helpful to employers and those seeking to enhance their career options. Because of the reliance on certification programs for career decisions, it is important a program is professionally managed and administered. Substantive Law Exam Revised September 2013
All examinees in retake status prior to May 2013 have been notified by the NALA Certifying Board of  changes to the specifications for the Certified Paralegal examination, Substantive Law section. The new specifications became effective with the SEPTEMBER 2013 testing window.

Click to review the exam specifications for the September 2013 and subsequent examinations.

Description of Changes-Substantive Law Section

Effective with the September 2013 Certified Paralegal examination, the Substantive Law section of the examination consists of questions on the American Legal System, Civil Litigation, Contracts, and Business Organizations.  The Substantive Law section is the same test for all examinees.

The following optional areas of the examination are no longer available:  Administrative Law, Bankruptcy, Criminal Law & Procedure, Estates and Probate, Family Law and Real Estate.

For all examinees in retake status for Substantive Law ….

If you last took the Substantive Law section before September 2013, and  it included any optional sections previously offered (Administrative Law, Bankruptcy, Criminal Law & Procedure, Estates and Probate, Family Law and Real Estate), questions from those sections of the examination will not be included in your retake.

If this presents a hardship …

Examinees in retake status whose two-year time period is close to expiration, may contact the Certifying Board and petition for additional time to prepare for the revised Substantive Law examination.  In review of your request the Certifying Board will consider:

  • The initial optional areas selected and taken by the examinee. Additional time for preparation will not be awarded for examinees who have already taken the sections on Civil Litigation, Contracts or Business Organizations.  The topics tested within each of these subjects on the Substantive Law section have not changed appreciably from the previous examination specifications.

  • The amount of time requested, and whether the examination retake could have occurred earlier.

  • Requests for extension of time related only to additional preparation for the Substantive Law section.

If granted, the award of additional time for preparation will apply only for completion of the Substantive Law section of the Certified Paralegal examination. No time extensions will awarded for any other examination section.
