CLA Exam Application 

Description of Category 3
Eligibility Requirement

Category 3 is for those applying based on experience only.  Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent plus seven (7) years' experience as a legal assistant/paralegal** plus a minimum of twenty (20) hours of continuing legal education completed within a two-year period prior to application for the examination.

Evidence of continuing education credit is documented by the attorney/employer attestation that must be signed to complete this application form. No further documentation is required.

**Within this category, "Legal assistant/paralegal" is defined as: Legal assistants or paralegals are a distinguishable group of persons who assist attorneys in the delivery of legal services. Through formal education, training and experience, legal assistants have knowledge and expertise regarding the legal system and substantive and procedural law which qualify them to do work of a legal nature under the supervision of an attorney.

To file under this category, complete the application form and submit it with:
  • original signed attestation required of category 3 applicants. This attestation should be signed by an attorney/employer and is used to verify participation in continuing legal education programs and a minimum of seven years paralegal experience.
  • if more than one attestation is required, print as many copies as needed and submit with the form.*

A completed application consists of the following:

  • application form (which includes all examinee data and examinee attestation)
  • original signed attestation required of ALL category 3 applicants
  • fees

*If former employers are not able to be contacted, the Certifying Board will accept an affidavit from the current employer which verifies previous experience.
